A Bright Future - Exploring Color Trends for 2017 and 2018
We looked to the world-renowned authority on color to help you sort out what colors will keep your home looking fresh in 2017 and beyond.
It's official, Greenery 15-0343 is the 2017 Color of the Year, according to PANTONE. For more than 50 years, PANTONE has inspired professionals in the design industry with color trends and inspirational tools. Since 2000, the company has selected a color that echoes the cultural environment during the given year. Those colors have gone on to have significant influences in fashion, architecture and, most importantly, interior design.
The 2017 Color of the Year, Greenery, places an emphasis on nature with a fresh,”zesty” yellow-green shade that symbolizes new beginnings, and connectivity with the outdoors and others. Ultimately, PANTONE says the color “signals the consumer to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.” Watch PANTONE’s Color of the Year 2017 video below for a look at Greenery.
In March, PANTONE announced its forecast for the 2018 color trends at the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, Illinois. At the show, PANTONE’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman shared the color and design trends, including eight palettes to look for in the coming year. Eiseman teased a palette with the classic metallics moving into neutrals, as well as a presence of iridescent and pearlized tones that “the human eye can absolutely not avoid.” (2) During the show, she also talked about a shift away from pastels, like PANTONE’s 2016 Colors of the Year Serenity and Rose Quartz, towards brighter colors, describing it as “a natural application of our intense lifestyles and thought processes of these days.”
Here are the eight color palettes to look forward to in 2018:
Resourceful: This palette features blue and oranges shades, combining complimentary colors of warm and cool tones.
Verdure: These colors feature vegetal tones like berry purple, eggshell blue and Celery, all “symbolic of health.”
Playful: From bright yellow to lime green, this palette lives up to its name.
Discretion: Meet the yin to Playful’s yang. Eiseman shared that with this palette, “pink has developed more power than ever before.”
Far-fetched: Bringing it back down to earth, this palette brings out warm tones like Cornsilk Yellow.
Intricacy: Intricacy shows the neutral metallic tones that Eiseman described, with red and yellow accents.
Intensity: An array of diverse colors are featured in this palette, balanced by black and gold meant to bring out strength, as well as a senses of power and sophistication.
TECH-nique: This palette featured the bright colors Eiseman also detailed as the shift away from pastels with bright pink, purple and turquoise colors balanced with Brilliant White and Frosted Almond. Eiseman described this palette as “a nod to technology” and being about hues that “seem to shine from within.”
